CANTON, Ga. -- Canton is a pretty nice place to live -- and many folks can probably come up with a lot of "C" words to describe Canton: "construction-new", "crime-low", and even "charming."

"Really great people, real natural beauty," said Bill Grant of the Canton Home Owners Association. "Citizens of Canton work really hard to keep it from being a crappy city."

But comedian Stephen Colbert had his own word for it on his Comedy Central show, and it is creating quite a commotion.

Canton, in Cherokee County, is a place where people take pride in their community. But people watching a comedy news show Monday night found out not everyone agrees.

"Canton -- and not the crappy Canton in Georgia, but Canton, Ohio," said Colbert.

The comment on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" has some folks stirred up.

"Well, number one, he's a comedian," said Canton Mayor Gene Hobgood. "And number two, it's clear to me that he has never been to Canton, Georgia."

"We don't appreciate it, especially from someone with a French last name,' Grant said.

Another shot -- Grant started a blog daring Colbert to come visit with a camera crew and an apology.

"You picked the wrong town to pick on," Grant said."You need to get her and get right with your slur against Canton, Georgia."

Is everyone up in arms? No -- it's a comedy show.

"I don't think people should be offended by it," said resident Sarah Cronauer. "I think people should laugh at it, 'cause that's what it's meant for."

In fact, the mayor says Colbert's diss has actually been a good thing.

"Quite honestly, his comments may keep some of those folks from Ohio and New York and up north from coming down here, you know? We may have won in the end anyway."
