DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Some DeKalb county residents are saying "no" to new taxes. Monday night, the city of Decatur will tackle the touchy subject of annexing areas of unincorporated DeKalb County.

Neighbors along Medlock Commons road in DeKalb County don't live in the city.. and don't want to.

"We are all satisfied with the services that we get from DeKalb county with police, fire, and sanitation," resident Jen Bowman said. "We don't need our taxes doubled for city services."

The group is gathering signatures and plans to fight annexation. All say they like living near the city, but they Just don't want to pay city taxes.

"The only reason they want this area is to generate more income," Joe Baird said.

"I thought this was something they'd given up on," resident Duane Weiskircher. "Emotionally, this is like finding out they're going to build another runway. It's just that dramatic on how it affects our quality of life."

Decatur Mayor Bill Floyd responded, saying "Will their taxes double? I can't say no for everybody, and I can't say yes for everybody. Will it change? Yes. I think it will change significantly in the short run.

The annexation plan also includes commercial property near the city borders. City leaders believe these areas will be developed and could change the face of Decatur.

The mayor says Monday's public hearing will have an impact. The annexation plan still needs to be approved by the city council, school board, and state legislature.

"I believe people that consider it openly and honestly honestly will come to realize the value of their house will also increase," Floyd said.

The public hearing is Monday night at city hall at 6:30.
