The Atlanta Tornado -- On the evening of March 14, a tornado hit Downtown Atlanta, damaging several major buildings that, to this day, remain under repair. The tornado was determined to be an EF-2 with winds of 135 miles per hour. Severe storms hit Metro Atlanta multiple times in March.

Bigfoot! -- Two Georgia men perpetrated an elaborate hoax on researchers and Bigfoot fans when they passed off a rubber suit as the heretofore-unforeseen creature not normally known for frequenting our state.

The Brian Nichols Trial -- Brian Nichols went on trial this year for his 2005 shooting spree in which he killed four people before being apprehended. Nichols's lawyers went with an insanity plea, but the jurors returned guilty verdicts on all counts.

Decision 2008 -- Democrat Barack Obama defeated John McCain in November to become the 44th President of the United States. Also, Senator Saxby Chambliss defeated challenger Jim Martin in a runoff election that meant the Democrats would not have a filibuster-proof supermajority in the Senate. This was one of the local races most-watched by a national audience.

The Economy -- Toward the end of the year, the economy took a turn for the worse; it was almost impossible to go a day without seeing another company laying off employees or cutting budgets. Georgians felt the sting just as hard as the rest of the nation.

Falcons Fly High Again -- After a dismal season highlighted by the Michael Vick dogfighting fiasco and Bobby Petrino's sudden departure, the Falcons rose from the ashes with a new coach, a new attitude, the Offensive Rookie of the Year, and a wild-card playoff berth.

Human Trafficking Charges for Judge, Son -- A former magistrate judge, his son (a sheriff's deputy), and the deputy's wife were indicted on charges of human trafficking for bringing over an Indian woman to be their nanny and then refusing to pay her. This was our most-viewed story on 11Alive.com for the year.

Lauren Burk and Eve Carson -- Lauren Burk from Marietta and Eve Carson from Athens were both attacked and killed within days of each other, Burk at Auburn and Carson at UNC-Chapel Hill, leading to an outpouring of grief and support from the Atlanta area.

Meet the Coupon Mom -- Crissy Thompson, the Coupon Mom, somehow manages to spend about $10 each week on groceries. We sent a reporter out to observe and learn from her coupon-fu.

Meredith Emerson -- Meredith Emerson disappeared while on a hiking trip on New Year's Day 2008. Hundreds joined the search for the young woman. It was later learned that she was abducted and killed by Gary Hilton, who confessed to the crime.

Midtown Cat Mystery Solved -- Talk about your 15 minutes of fame: in July, a serval named Ozzy escaped its owner's home and was captured by Animal Control. He was transferred to a facility where it could be properly cared-for. After that, he disappeared from the headlines.

Rai Gets Life in Prison for Murder-for-Hire Plot -- A Fulton County jury decided on life in prison for Chiman Rai, accused of hiring an assassin to kill his daughter-in-law because she was not Indian.

Significant Snow in Metro Atlanta -- Atlanta was home to an uncharacteristically-snowy January which saw two significant storms drop enough snow on the area to let local kids create snowmen, have snowball fights, and just listen to the soft patter of flakes as they fell.

Thrown Cat Escapes Without Apparent Injury -- 11Alive.com visitors were shocked to see a burglary committed in Henry County where, as the suspect departed, he threw a cat into the air. The cat escaped without apparent injury. The video is a must-see.

Troy Davis -- Troy Davis was scheduled to be excecuted this year for a crime he committed in 1989, but after several witnesses recanted, Davis received multiple stays of execution. He remains on death row, with no date of execution set.

Where's the Gas? -- Two hurricanes that came through the Gulf of Mexico led to major gasoline supply problems for Georgia. 11Alive viewers worked together to help each other find gas during the crisis, which saw prices averaging $4.00/gallon.
