Ordinarily we'd actually be happy that we were getting this much rain this time of year...and that two inches of rain wouldn't get us watching for flooding.

But because of everything that has come before...with the soil already soaked...and the creeks already high...any significant rain brings the possibility of flooding....

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, most of the streams and rivers in Metro Atlanta are supposed to stay within or close to their banks.

And if any of them do flood, it is not supposed to be significant.

That we are concerned about the possibility of flooding at all has to do with what has happened recently.

"The kind of rains that we got in September" said The Weather Channel's Dr. Greg Forbes, "without them being a tropical storm making landfall...that was just totally bizarre."

The numbers tell the story.

So far this month we've gotten six point three seven inches of rain...where we usually get just over two and a half.

Since September first we've received about fifteen and a third inches of rain...with normal being six point six six inches.

And from the first of this year fifty two and a quarter inches of rain have fallen...almost eleven inches above normal.  Add to that what we're getting today.

"That would have been welcome in what otherwise would often be a pretty dry period" Dr. Forbes said. "But now we're starting out just so saturated that every storm is becoming new nail biting time."

If there is any silver lining in this wet and soggy cloud, it's that the El Nino pattern that is influencing our weather now is supposed to strengthen over the winter.

If it acts as predicted that should mean a drying out period for north Georgia.

That's if it acts as predicted.

But for the near term, there's more rain coming this Friday...into Saturday....Halloween.

Now, that's scary.
