SUWANEE, Ga. -- A reminder from Suwanee Police: do not walk or jog alone in the parks.
A woman who was in George Pierce Park off of Buford Highway Thursday afternoon told police she was able to free herself from a man who grabbed her from behind while she was walking alone.
Two months ago (Sept. 8), a woman in Suwanee Creek Park was assaulted like that by a man who had the same description; she escaped from his grasp by spraying Mace into his face.
"He was dressed in a black, long-sleeved shirt, black gloves, a black ski mask, dark colored pants, about six-foot tall, medium build, approximately 190 to 200 pounds," said Suwanee Police Sgt. Shane Edmisten.
Neither woman was able to describe the man in any more detail than that.
The woman who was assaulted Thursday was walking at about 3:00 p.m., when many people were at the park playing soccer and hitting baseballs, jogging and walking. She took a turn into the woods along an asphalt-paved trail that is near the park's main drive but secluded from it.
"She was walking on the trail. Someone came up behind her. Put his hands on her waist. At that time she turned, pushed him away, and ran. And was able to get away.... I'm just glad that she was able to gain distance and get away from him."
After running to safety, she called 911.
"We saturated the park with personnel yesterday afternoon. Within 45 seconds of receiving the call, we had the entire park shut down. There's only one exit. We had it shut down and were able to see who was leaving the park. We did stop and speak with several people, but were unable to come up with any leads. We then moved to other parks within the city, and searched those parks as well. And we actually put officers on foot talking with runners and bicyclers in the parks."
Suwanee Police and Gwinnett County Police and citizen volunteers have, since then, been patrolling the parks in and around Suwanee.
"We want people to know that we've got officers out there... [with] extra patrols within the parks."
Edmisten is telling people who use any parks, anywhere, "don't go alone." And when they're in Suwanee parks he's suggesting they program, into their cell phones, the Suwanee Police Department's phone number, for quicker response than from calling 911.
