ATLANTA -- On any given day in the morning or late afternoon, there is an endless stream of people making their way around Atlanta Memorial Park in Buckhead. The park draws people from the neighborhood and from all over Atlanta, the park's two mile gently rolling loop ideal for runners and cyclists alike. But the heart of the park, the large flat play area and playground, remains empty, yellow tape encircling it for almost two months now.

Memorial Park was plunged five feet underwater during the September floods, the water filled with raw sewage discharged into the Chattahoochee River. But samples taken from Memorial park and tested for contaminants have come back and the results are good, the park is not contaminated. That's good news, except for the fact the park will remain closed.

Atlanta Parks Commissioner Dianne Harnell Cohen says that the ground is still too saturated from the floods and that Memorial Park could remain closed for a few more months, until it's dry enough to take in heavy equipment and clean up the playground.

Atlanta's 334 city parks suffered six million dollars in damage from the floods. There are 28 sinkholes to repair and several other smaller areas that suffered flood damage.
