GOP Attorney Gen. Candidate Admits Affair With Staffer
ATLANTA (AP) -- A Republican candidate for attorney general has acknowledged an extramarital affair with a former staffer, but says the relationship began after the woman was no longer an employee.
State Senator Preston Smith told The Associated Press on Thursday the woman left his office in 2003. He says the relationship began in 2004, adding he has never dated anyone employed by his office or his campaign.
Legislative records show the woman received her last payment from Smith's office in December 2003. Finance records also show the woman received payment that year from Smith's campaign.
The lawmaker acknowledged the relationship during a divorce hearing last year. He says he fell short in his personal life but believes he's the best candidate for attorney general.
